Some unknown person, from this email address – justnikhil@rediffmail.com, just left this comment on my blog entry “Lights On”: 

“We do admit that we (Indians) are poor, uncivilised, uneducated people.  But we do take pride in talking our language, paying heed to our traditions and cultures. (maybe you were ignorant enough to assume English
was our national language since we were colonized for 4 centuries!)  So before you abuse us, spare a thought for your own people from the country you come from, who are racists (been so since ages and still are!), war-mongers, sex-maniacs, money-minded, (the list could go on ..but you get the idea) despite being the so-called ‘highly educated and civilised’ class on the planet.Please never come back to Mysore.

I emailed this strange person back with this response:

Hello …… 

I am sorry you feel so hostile towards me – don’t know who you are…. 

First off, I think you have a few personal issues you may want to observe before you try to attack a stranger.  Never have i said or written that you (Indians) are poor, or uncivilized or uneducated…Glad you take pride in your language but when I am at a police station with highly educated men who DO SPEAK FLUENT ENGLISH – and “I” am the victim of a crime – IT IS ONLY CIVILIZED TO SPEAK - CONDUCT THE CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH!!!  As far as your national language – IT IS FACT THAT “YOUR” NATIONAL LANGUAGE ‘IS” ENGLISH – HAS BEEN FOR SOME TIME….Although only about 60% of ‘your’ population can speak English – it is “your” national language…So don’t email me or comment on my blog and DARE call me ignorant… Never have I judged “your” people and most definitely haven’t abused ‘You’ – sorry, however, that you feel the need to do so to “my” people… 

Sorry to disappoint you but I will most definitely be back to Mysore… 

Your consolation over my laptop is totally unnecessary – however, if YOU were a civilized human being you may give a shit about the fact that a stranger came into my home, invaded my privacy, and personally violated me!!!!  Please don’t EVER comment to my blog or email me again!!!!!! Om Shanti, Krista  _________________________________

   Actually, Hindi is recognized as India’s official language. It is in their constitution.
   English is an additional official language, but not a large portion of the population speak this language.
