“Rockin In The Third World”

I am burnt to a crisp – but only on certain parts of my body!  Yeah, that is one of the many major accomplishments of this beautiful Saturday in Koh Samui!  The Advanced training session ended last night and many people left this morning…We had a nice pranayama session till 9am followed by the infamous Banana Pancakes (OMG delicious).

After breakfast Kwang and I headed out to Nathon to do a little shopping – I saw a gorgeous painting there yesterday that I really wanted but needed to think about (they wanted 2500 baht for it and it is well worth more but I wasn’t gonna pay that price and I have been searching around for the ‘perfect’ piece of artwork and wanted to make sure that this was it.  So after a night’s deliberation I decided that it was!  We spent about ten minutes trying to find this place again and when we did the artist was happy to see me again (as I am sure he has heard tons of people say they will come back tomorrow and never show – heck I am guilty of that myself)…I told him I’d pay 1900 baht for it and we settled on 2000 baht…I couldn’t believe I was walking away with the most amazing painting for about $50.00…But I did and it sure made my day.  Feeling totally content with my purchase my life only got better from there as we just happened upon a fruit vendor and had two of the most delicious cold coconuts I’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy!  Yummy!  Then we stopped into a bag stand (the one I visited last time I was in Thailand) and checked out luggage as I need another piece b/c Kwang will take some stuff back to the states with him in the bag I have now and I will need one to get back to India.  They quoted a darn good price for the luggage I wanted (I’ve been shopping around for this too and been given a lot of much higher prices for the same type of bag)…Told them I’d think about it and they said they’d give a good discount if I came back…

We did a little more walking around before we made our way to our ‘scooter for the day’ and scooted to Chaweng b/c Kwang wanted to go back to that side of the island – although I wasn’t complaining b/c there are tons of fruit vendors over there as that is where most of the tourists are – and I was on a mission to drink as many coconuts as I could today!  Once there we definitely hit up the first Two coconut stands we came across.  We did some walking but soon decided to get outta this area of the island b/c 1) we’d seen it all before (last weekend), 2) it didn’t have near as much character as Nathon and thus not worth our time, and 3) we wanted to try to find some new shops to possibly purchase some cheap stuff from J  So we left and headed towards Fisherman’s Village – it is in between Centered Yoga and Chaweng…There isn’t really much shopping over there but I wanted to take Kwang there so he could see what it was like, I wanted to see it again for myself, and I wanted to eat over there – although Kwang ate at Burger King in Chaweng – but I knew he’d eat again and I was right!!!

After that we opted to go back to Nathon so Kwang could pick up some monk bags he’d seen before and so I could see about the luggage…It started raining on us while en route but it was rather refreshing on our burning arms, legs, and faces…We hadn’t realized just how much sun we were getting all day in the sun but did come to the realization during our hour in the shade eating by the beach…Man we were both red as lobsters and the day in the sun definitely took it’s toll on me – I felt totally drained but did seem to feel a thousand times better after consuming a real meal – I hadn’t eaten since breakfast but created a false feeling of being full due to the oh I’d say ten coconuts I’d drank.  On our way back to Nathon I felt great – full of energy and quite happy as I’d spent another wonderful day in an amazingly beautiful and unique island with the guy I love – who could ask for anything more!  And as I do often do, I started singing happy happy tunes from the top of my head into Kwang’s ear as we scooter along…Today’s song went something like this “Rockin in the Third World,” “We are Rockin in the Third World!”  You get the jest but you just weren’t lucky enough to hear it live!

Once we got back to Nathon we found the bag store and not only did Kwang get not one but two of the Monk Bags he’d been thinking about all day, but I got a STEAL on a Great piece of luggage…I paid 1650 baht for a piece of luggage that will comfortably fit me, my yoga bag, mat, all my clothes, and maybe even Kwang too!  It was priced at 2900 baht but I talked the guy down – and you really don’t understand how good a deal this was b/c I had been quoted as high as 5,000 baht for this bag —-yeah it was my lucky day today!

We recently made our way back to Centered Yoga, and I must say it felt like home sweet home.  Kwang talked me into going to the beach to read while he took a swim (and insisted he’d be out there for a long time)…We get on our suits and go to the beach and he swam for about two seconds, then he sat in the ocean for a few minutes before running out and back in again like a little kid…I swear at that moment I fell in love with this kid all over again – he had the cutest smile on his face and seemed to be in paradise (well he is).  But the cute kid wore himself out after a few short minutes and wanted to go back to the bungalow… I was totally ok with that – but oh so grateful for the five minutes we spent on the beach b/c I hadn’t seen that side of Kwang in a very long time, and it really took my breath away…

The moral of today’s story:  If you have a dream, want to do something different, want to experience life…do it!  There is nothing stopping you but yourself…Money, it comes and goes, but time is limited and the value of pursing your dreams is priceless.  You never know, this time next year you too could be ‘Rockin in the Third World’  ;)
