“When you gotta go, you gotta go!”
Kwang and I had a very interesting trip to town this evening! As poor Kwang was going absolutely stir crazy cooped up in the bungalow all day he desperately wanted to ‘get the hell outta Centered Yoga’ for a bit. I know what you are thinking – he is in paradise and he’s complaining…But I give him a ton of credit b/c this type of tropical paradise with beautiful views, lots of sun, an ocean just feet from your door, fresh air, clean food, all the yoga you can handle – well this type of paradise isn’t usually Kwang’s cup of tea…So I totally felt for the guy and opted to go into Nathon with him after doing a bit of work this afternoon.
Nathon is the town to the west of Maenam, where Centered Yoga is located. It takes about fifteen minutes by truck to get there, and I must say the cool evening air was just what I needed. Before we headed out around 5:30pm I grabbed my jeans, which really excited me as I haven’t been able to wear them since I arrived on Koh Samui as it is EXTREMELY humid on the island…But I could tell tonight would be a breezy evening and I would find my jeans to come in quite handy…Boy was I right. I don’t know what the trucks are called, but they are they main method of transportation for tourists on the island. You hop onto the back of it and ring the little bell when you come to your stop. They ROCK!! But they are open so the breeze comes right in – how nice! Anyway, when we got to Nathon we made our way to the street vendors as Kwang was on a mission to eat some meat…Not that he dislikes the food at Centered Yoga at all, and not that he minds not eating meat for a while – but I just think he needed to get out for a bit and indulge on things he really enjoyed – like meat. I partook in this event as well. I had a bit of pork and some rice…And after our meal I found a little shop that sold baked goods and bought a small piece of banana bread (oh yeah baby it was uber tasty).
We walked around for a brief bit of time but soon opted to get a truck back to Centered Yoga as it was getting pretty dark and we knew it wouldn’t be long before we were stuck in Nathon with the only option being a overpriced taxi back…The truck we found charged way too much too but it was better than the alternative so we took it! Only problem was that he didn’t know where we were going, and it was really dark outside so neither Kwang nor I could see where we were (and it didn’t help that we got into a pretty deep conversation during our little ride making us forget to focus on the darkness in the hopes we could see where we were)…Well, long story short, we passed Centered Yoga, by quite a long ways away. When I finally noticed this fact, Kwang insisted that we hadn’t so we went a little ways further before he concurred and we pressed the button for the guy to stop. We paid the guy 150 baht for a ride that should have cost 80 baht during the day, only to be dropped off an hour and fifteen minutes walk outta our way! I am not complaining at all though – b/c I quite wanted to walk – the air was fresh and breezy, Kwang and I had tons to talk about, we were outta the confines of Centered yoga for a bit, the sun wasn’t beating down on us, we knew which direction we were supposed to head to get back ‘home’, and it was plain fun walking the streets of Koh Samui on a random Sunday evening; there was only one problem – my bladder was beyond capacity and felt as if it were going to explode! Kwang and I probably walked a good thirty minutes before I reached the point of no return…I told Kwang I needed to find a spot where I could ‘pop a squat’… “What, Krista you are becoming so unladylike and it’s not like you were that much of a lady to begin with!” Well, I totally took that as a compliment considering I am a southern girl who grew up very country. I mean gees, when I was really little my granddaddy used to make my sisters and I stop on the side of the road to pee during our long car trip from South Carolina to Alabama (that is until he started taking the water pill in his later years!) I don’t personally see anything wrong with peeing in the bushes, especially if it is really dark outside and there is no one around – When you gotta go you gotta go! And I did, so I did! I soon found a nice spot for which to relieve myself, and all the while Kwang stood on the roadside ‘keeping a lookout’ – he simply advised me not to pee on myself! It is really too funny to see us together in times like these b/c it really becomes obvious that we were brought up so differently!
After I ‘lightened my load’ I felt like a feather and sprinted from the bushes with a smile on my face and a tremendous feeling of relief! From then on I felt as though I could walk for days and days…And it sort of seemed as though we were going to. But it really was great fun, and hey, we didn’t have anything better to do anyway. We just walked and walked and talked and talked. All this time away has brought me back to enjoying the simple things in life and really trying to appreciate everything so much more. What I do with my days is so different, but so much purer and more meaningful nowadays. Our walk tonight was just one example and it didn’t cost a dime, it didn’t require a lot of work, thought, or planning, and it didn’t take anything away from anyone else. I felt so happy inside b/c I am realizing more and more with everything I do how truly grateful I am to be here on this earth each and everyday.
Kwang and I finally made it back to Centered Yoga, about an hour and a half after we were dropped off in the wrong place (no one’s fault but our own) – and I would not have had it any other way!
